About us

Loved by locals, lauded by visitors.

We’re a community of independent businesses – a mix of retailers, services, cafes, pubs and restaurants. We’re fiercely proud of our fantastic high street, and we work together to ensure it thrives.

We were thrilled to be crowned Britain’s Best High Street in the 2015 Great British High Street Awards – an accolade that recognised our unique blend of friendliness, community spirit and independent enterprise.

150 years of community

Bishopthorpe Road has been home to traders of all types for over 150 years, although many of the shops were once private homes. However, some – such as M&K Butchers and Fruitique – have traded as the same type of business for more than a century.

Others, such as Pextons, have existed since the 1950s. Today, it’s busy and vibrant, with a proud community behind it.
